Many of us might assume that to have high speeds, you need a loud, big, brash, and bold supercar. However, there are a number of cars out there that defy that convention and offer high levels of performance in much smaller packages.
This list contains ten excellent compact cars that offer almost supercar levels of performance for a fraction of the cost of their big cousins. Plus, some of them are very affordable, meaning you can have much more money left over after you’ve bought them.
Volkswagen Golf R

Volkswagen knows how to produce a hot hatchback, and the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R sums that up perfectly. It retains the gorgeous and famous looks of the Golf, which packs in the punch of the EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine under the hood.
That engine is good enough for 320 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque and leads to a top speed of 172 mph. With DSG and launch control activated, the 2022 Golf R can also launch from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, further underlying its speed and performance.
Toyota MR2 Mk3

The Toyota MR2 is much missed from the Japanese manufacturer’s lineup. It was a fabulous car to drive and a big rival to Mazda’s MX-5. The MR2 is arguably more enjoyable to drive than the NB MX-5 and perhaps a better-looking car as well.
Power comes from a 1.8-liter engine, which provides plenty of punch, but the MR2 truly excels in the corners. Rumors have run for a while about a possible return of the MR2, but for now, we wait with bated breath to see if it does make a comeback.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X FQ-400

The world needs the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo to make a comeback. Of all the versions produced over the years, the Evo X FQ-400 might be the best. It was one of the special editions Mitsubishi produced with ludicrous power levels.
Power comes from a mighty turbocharged four-cylinder engine, making 408 horsepower and 387 lb-ft of torque. The top speed was 155 mph, and the Evo X FQ-400 could spring from 0 to 60 mph in a rapid 3.8 seconds.
Toyota GR86

With a current starting price of just $30,000 as of 2025, the Toyota GR86 is one of the best bang-for-your-buck performance cars currently on the market. Not only is it affordable, but it’s fast and punchy, too, making plenty of power thanks to its Boxer engine.
The 2.4-liter four-cylinder Boxer powertrain makes 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This is, of course, the same engine used in the GR86’s sister, the Subaru BRZ, but the GR86 wins on desirability due to its lower MSRP.
Subaru BRZ

The Subaru BRZ is the sister vehicle to the Toyota GR86, and the two companies work together to produce two spectacular little sports cars. The BRZ packs the same 2.4-liter Boxer engine as the Toyota and again produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.
As of 2025, the BRZ’s starting price is $32,210. It is a little more expensive than its sister, but it has unique styling. Thanks to its superb handling and the sheer amount of fun it offers, it is just as good value for money as the Toyota.
Mini Cooper John Cooper Works (JCW)

The Mini Cooper JCW proves that you can have fun in a ludicrously small package. It is the higher-performance version of the Mini from John Cooper Works, the legendary tuning division that has a long association with the Mini Cooper.
The current Cooper JCW boasts a 2.0-liter 306 horsepower four-cylinder turbocharged engine under the hood, and it is incredibly rapid thanks to its 0-62 mph time of 5.2 seconds and an outrageous top speed of 164 mph.
Audi RS3 performance

Although it isn’t as compact as other vehicles on this list, the Audi RS3 Performance is a hugely impressive beast. What makes it more incredible is that it has a five-cylinder engine, something that has always been a rarity but one that Audi uses to significant effect.
The RS3 Performance has a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five under the hood, making 407 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. Its top speed is a dizzying 186 mph, and its 0-60 mph time is just 3.3 seconds. For a family car, that is an incredible level of power and performance, showing how good Audi has become at making performance sedans.
Acura Integra Type S

If you want a compact sedan with plenty of luxury and a dashing performance, the current Acura Integra Type S might be the one for you. While more expensive than the standard offering, the Integra Type S packs in even more power from the turbocharged VTEC inline-four under the hood.
Acura rates the power at 320 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, with a top speed of 167 mph. The Integra Type S is quick out of the blocks, too, with an impressive 5.7-second 0-60 mph time and a weight of just 3,219 lbs.
Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy-R

Renault has a long history of producing impressive hot hatchbacks, and the hottest of all time is the Mégane R.S. Trophy-R. The Trophy R is a monster, lapping the incredible Nurburgring in 2019 in 7:45.389, which at the time was a record for front-wheel drive cars.
Under the hood is the same 300 horsepower engine as the regular Mégane R.S., but with an extra amount of weight reduction, the Trophy-R is even faster. This also means it is extra nimble in the corners, which makes it even more enjoyable to drive.
Toyota GR Corolla

The Toyota GR range might be one of the best on the market right now, and the incredible GR Corolla shows just how strong this range is. Under the hood of the GR Corolla is a brilliant three-cylinder turbocharged engine, the same found in the brilliant GR Yaris.
Toyota has tuned it up, however, so the GR Corolla produces 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. This translates to a 0-60 mph time of just 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 143 mph, which the manufacturer electronically limits.
