7 race Porsches at Luftgekühlt’s Atlanta debut, from the Whittingtons’ 1979 935 K3 to a Gulf 917K

Luftgekühlt held its first Atlanta-area show on October 10, 2026, and a strong field of race Porsches came with it. The cars lined the streets of Town at Trilith in Fayetteville, Georgia. Porsche’s own report counts about 300 display cars and 8,000 fans. They came even though hurricane warnings pushed the start back by several hours. In the end, the weather stayed dry.

The air-cooled Porsche gathering began in 2014 as a meet-up in a Los Angeles parking lot. Le Mans class winner Patrick Long and creative director Howie Idelson organized it. This 12th edition also marked 75 years of Porsche in motorsport, according to the organizers. Here are seven of the race Porsches on display and the history behind each one.

The Whittington brothers’ 1979 935 K3 was the show’s poster car, according to the organizers. Porsche’s report on the event says brothers Don and Bill Whittington drove this 935 K3 to win Le Mans in 1979. German driver Klaus Ludwig shared the car with them. Around the same time, the brothers also bought the Road Atlanta circuit.

The car ran as No. 41 for Kremer Racing and won on June 10, 1979, according to the Automobile Club de l’Ouest. It was Porsche’s fifth Le Mans win. The ACO adds that Bill and Don are the only siblings to win the race in the same car. Meanwhile, the display marked 50 years of the 935 with three yellow Whittington cars and a Brumos 935.

Plenty of visitors may have recognized this one. According to the Porsche Newsroom report, Brian Redman set a fastest time in this 917 K at the 1970 Le Mans test. Later, Formula One driver Jo Siffert bought it and rented it out for Steve McQueen’s film Le Mans.

In 2020, Car and Driver reported that chassis 917-024, the Gulf car from the McQueen film, had joined the Brumos Collection. Le Mans organizers say 917-024 set the best time at the 1970 Le Mans Test Day with Mike Hailwood and Redman driving. However, it did not start the race.

3. 1959 Porsche 718 RSK

This small Spyder represents a Targa Florio that got away. Porsche says this RSK set the fastest lap and led much of the 1959 race in Sicily. Then a suspension failure on the final lap cost it the win.

Period coverage tells the same story. Motor Sport’s July 1959 report says the leading RSK of Jo Bonnier and Wolfgang von Trips broke its rear suspension. It stopped about 23 km from the finish. As a result, Edgar Barth and Wolfgang Seidel took the victory in another works RSK.

4. Porsche 718 RS 60 Spyder

The RS 60 gave Porsche the Targa Florio win that slipped away a year earlier. Porsche’s report describes it as the RS 60 that won in 1960. The show also used it to mark 70 years since Porsche’s first overall Targa victory in 1956.

Jo Bonnier and Hans Herrmann drove the winning 718 RS 60 Spyder in 1960, according to Racecar’s rundown of Porsche’s Targa wins. In total, Porsche scored 11 overall Targa Florio victories, which Porsche says is more than any other maker.

5. Porsche 904 Carrera GTS

The 904 brought Porsche another win in Sicily four years later. Porsche’s event report calls this car the 904 Carrera GTS that won the 1964 Targa Florio.

Colin Davis and Antonio Pucci shared that 1964 victory, according to the same Racecar list of Porsche’s Targa winners. It was Porsche’s fifth overall win in the race, after 1956, 1959, 1960 and 1963.

The 908/3 is an open Spyder built for two of the hardest circuits in racing. According to Porsche, it developed the model specifically for the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring.

That plan paid off quickly. A 908/03 Spyder won the 1970 Targa Florio with Jo Siffert and Brian Redman, Racecar’s list shows. Those same two names also run through the story of the Gulf 917 K in this gallery.

7. Porsche 962 C

The newest of these race Porsches is the 962 C from the Group C era. Porsche’s photos from Atlanta show it next to a Dauer-Porsche 962 Le Mans, a road-legal car built from the same design.

The 962 C won Le Mans in 1986 and 1987, according to Porsche’s Group C history. Later, in 1994, a Dauer 962 Le Mans won the race outright with Yannick Dalmas, Mauro Baldi and Hurley Haywood. Le Mans organizers count that as Porsche’s 13th overall win at the Sarthe circuit.
