Most car buyers would walk straight past a high mileage diesel with a known engine fault. It sits low on the list of cars anyone gets excited about, dismissed as tired, unremarkable, and destined for nothing more than reliable but boring commuting duty. That reputation is exactly why a car like this one tends to get overlooked, and exactly why one owner decided to buy it anyway.
He picked up the BMW 123d for £1,800, approximately $2,340, a price that came down from an original $2,600 asking price after a vehicle history report helped him negotiate $260 off. It had 140,000 miles on the odometer and a leaking fuel injector seal that was still waiting to be fixed. By most measures, this looked like a car worth avoiding rather than celebrating.
He already had experience with the model, having previously owned another 123D and come away convinced it was one of the most underrated daily drivers on the market. The 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel engine carries a factory rating of at least 200 horsepower and 400 newton meters of torque, numbers that already outperform what most people expect from a diesel daily driver. What he found once this particular, well-worn example ended up on a dyno challenges the assumption that a cheap, high mileage diesel has nothing left to give.
Checking the Car’s History First

Driving the remapped car, he found the extra power translated into a noticeably stronger pull through the rev range, a trait less common among diesel engines, which typically deliver a burst of torque low down before tapering off. He noted the car kept building power further into the rev range than he expected for the engine type.
Combined with rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox on this particular example, the driving experience leans further toward genuinely engaging than most budget diesel commuters manage. He has pointed to the chassis as one of the car’s strongest traits, with handling that outperforms its price bracket, and with the brakes freshly replaced, the car finally responded the way he expected rather than fighting worn components.
A Cheap Car With Room to Grow
What he ended up proving is not that every high mileage diesel is a hidden performance bargain. It is that the 123D’s underlying engineering, a genuinely potent factory powertrain wrapped in an affordable, practical shell, leaves real room to work with even when a car shows its age. A $2,340 purchase price, a fault still waiting to be fixed, and 140,000 miles on the clock did not stop this engine from responding to a tune the way a much newer car might.
Once he gets around to replacing that injector seal, there is a reasonable case that the power figure climbs even further from where it already sits.
